I had the pleasure last weekend to participate in Wyoming Game and Fish’s pilot program for mentor training and a program they called Beyond BOW (Becoming an Outdoors Woman). The program brought together several women that were interested in either becoming hunters or expanding their hunting prowess to another area (archery, rifle, or shotgun). We had 8 mentors to assist the hunters. As mentors we were able to participate in many aspects of the training along side the hunters, demonstrating that we are all continuing to learn.
As mentors we discussed the First Hunt program near Cody and how that program can possibly be expanded around the state in each of our areas. I am excited to see how this could be done in my area. The weekend culminated with a simulated hunt. This was a highlight for both hunters and mentors, as we helped the hunters practice skills learned on the range and shoot at realistic targets after a “stalk”. The hunters all commented on how their hearts were pounding and they were excited to continue their hunting journey. Many of the hunters and mentors plan to stay in touch and work towards a real hunt. I hope the program continues and expands. I was glad to be a part of this and hope others help make it a success in the future.
The program was a combined effort of Wyoming Game and Fish, Safari Club International, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, First Hunt Foundation, and Wyoming Outdoorsmen.
