R.i.P. Tom Skerritt

He directed a film called Divided by Hate that was surprisingly memorable. I'm not sure I've ever actually met anyone else who has seen it, and I think it was the only movie he ever directed himself. Solid guy, he had a good reputation in Seattle.

I lived in Los Angeles for a few years after Top Gun had been a hit movie. I could walk two blocks from my apartment to a family-run, very small Italian restaurant where grandma made the fresh pasta. Must have been a favorite place for Tom Skerritt as I would bump into him several times a year and I only went there once or twice a month while lived in that neighborhood for 6 years. He was always polite to staff, usually was with his wife, Sue. One time he was with what presumably was his 20ish year old son and the son's girlfriend where Tom was having a rather serious discussion. Never saw a paparazzi there.

I lived long enough on the West side of Los Angeles that seeing people from movies, tv shows and commercials was a common thing and they did not seem any more interesting to observe than other people. Most were not huge stars obviously. Would see OJ, too, and pro athletes but they tended to be at trendier places than a small Italian joint with crappy parking options.

RIP.
