WY Deer in September

I have put in for WY deer units H and E as my first and second preference. I'll be DIY hunting there in September during the bow season and understand that the deer will normally be up high at this time.

I have started looking at the units and maps for specific spots. How high will the deer be and is it realistic to day hunt above the tree line? Also typically now many virtical feet would you climb from the trail head?

Any advice greatly appreciated. Thanks.

They can be found as high you are willing to go in most of the country you are referring to, except for some of the glaciated areas in the Winds. Doesn't mean they are all high, you can find bucks in bucky spots...not all bucky spots are on the mountain top. If you want an alpine hunt you are often looking at 2K-4K feet above the trailhead; of course there are exceptions. Living out of a pack above treeline and hunting deer is pure magic.

Possible to day hunt alpine country for deer: yes
Efficient to day hunt alpine country for deer: rarely

Also, and I'm guessing you've already found info on this during your research, H is fairly well strewn with wilderness areas which are off-limits to hunting by nonresidents without a guide. Still plenty of high stuff around, but it does complicate things, for H particularly.

my deer spot in H is about 3500 vertical feet and 5 miles from road. i like to hike right to the top day before i hunt, get above them and look down. early to mid sept on top the mountain is usually pretty good camping weather. i sleep right at my primary spotting place and it allows me to be well rested for when i do decide to stalk one in the right place. thats me, they can be found lower but i like the alpine bucks!

Thanks dihardhunter and Chris. Yes, did know about the NR wilderness law and will plan accordingly. Seems a bit of a funny law btw, is it to promote guiding?

Alpine bucks sounds great. Nice to be above them, especially with the bow as it gives more options. Hopefully the are like NZ game animals and usually don't look up :)
