Part 1.1 - Wyoming

My wife and I have been building points in Wyoming for deer and antelope for a while now. We decided this was the year to cash them in and go chase some speed goats. I did a bunch of research and picked a unit that had a little later season because of other hunts I had planned. A cool bonus for this hunt was a good friend of ours (we’ll call her K) moved to Wyoming 6 or 7 years ago. She had never killed an antelope so I told her what unit and hunt to apply for and she drew as well. So my goal for this hunt was to get these two ladies their first antelope and get one for myself as well. K and my wife and I all used to go to church together where we served with the youth on Wednesday nights. It was going to be a lot of fun to all hang out again. We’d be able to stay at her house in town because the unit we were hunting was only a 25 minute drive away. It was a nice change of pace to have a comfy bed to sleep in every night. I had 5 or 6 days to Hunt, my wife only had 3 (she was flying out), our friend had some afternoons after work that she would be able to tagalong.

I left SC on November 1. I got to K’s house on the afternoon of the 2nd, but it was a little too late to head out so we just took it easy that evening and talked. The plan for the next day was for me to head out and begin scouting/hunting and K would meet up with me around 1 o’clock.

I headed out early the next morning and began looking all over the unit. It took me until about 10 o’clock to locate my first group of antelope. I passed a few bucks that morning looking for a big one, but also hoping to lock down a few groups for Kaitlin and K. Just before 1 o’clock I located a big buck with a group of does, but I was unable to get a shot under about 750 yards and I didn’t want to try to shoot that far if it could be avoided so I went and picked up K at the gate and we headed in to see if we can make a move on that big buck or what else we could find. When driving back in I saw the big buck again and thought there was a way we could work around to get above him and possibly get a shot. We began driving the long way around to where he was when I spotted a group of antelope. We were watching one group when all of a sudden another group started trotting towards us out of nowhere and there was a nice buck in the group. I told K let’s get set up and see if that buck offers you a shot. I got my rifle on the tripod and put my trekking poles under the back of the gun while we sat and waited. Then the antelope bedded down. So we sat and waited for an hour and a half. Every once in a while one in the group would stand up and I would have K practice dry firing on whichever one would stand up. She said she felt solid and finally the buck stood up at 430yds. She squeeze the trigger and the gun went off. The entire group of antelope took off to the right. When she shot I saw dirt kick up in the background and I was afraid she had shot just over him. However, I was wrong. The bullet zipped right through him and after about 40 yards, he began to slow and then he went down. He was probably on his feet for 10 seconds after the shot.

We went over and found him. He was a really pretty buck. K was incredibly happy. This was her first western animal and tag one of three was punched.

Day 2-3

On day 2 I headed out solo. Kaitlin would be arriving around 10pm that night. My goal was to find the big antelope I’d seen on day 1 and scout for Kaitlin. These antelope had been hunted hard but I found a group of 17 that had 4 bucks. 1 was a nice buck. They were in a good location to hunt with Kaitlin and not as skiddish as a lot of the antelope were so I left them alone in hopes of finding them the next day. I found another good buck in a group of a dozen or so, but he only had one horn. The bucks were starting to drop thier sheaths and little did I know that this was going to start making things a bit more difficult. Day 2 ended without any shots fired.

Day 3
Kaitlin and I headed out not super early but still fairly early. Not too long into the day I spotted a group an antelope with a nice buck. They were in a location with some terrain that would allow us to make a stalk out of sight. We made a big 3 mile loop coming up to the south of them using a fence post as cover. Some of the antelope were bedded and some were standing. We waited a bit and they all bedded based off the ranges I was getting I thought they were around 400yards away, but there was a small rise between us that made it impossible to shoot without standing and we weren’t set up for that so as soon as we were able we moved up. My goal was to make it 200yds to the little rise then sit down and wait. Well, we made it about 100 and they stood up 150yds away. They had only been 250yds away not 400. We actually got set up and got the gun on him but he had a bush in front of him so I told Kaitlin not to shoot. They took off.

About 2 hours later while covering ground we stopped the truck and I walked out on a little point to glass. Wouldn’t you know it down below me were 6 does and the big buck I’d been trying to find. Kaitlin told me to go get him. I took off after them. Unfortunately, there was only one place they could spot me during the stalk and from 1200yds away they did. They began to move around the back side of the big plateau. I went over the top and caught up with them on the back side. They were 350yds away walking away. That buck never broadside until he got to 850yds. He stopped a couple times with his butt to me but I wasn’t going to take that shot. There was no way to close the distance without being seen. The antelope won that round too.

At last light we finally found the group of 17 I was looking for. Unfortunately now there were only 2 bucks. We got set up on them at around 400 yards, but they were bunched up feeding slowly from our right to left. The best buck would lift his head then put it back down getting back in with the does. Eventually we ran out of light.

Day 4

We got out a little earlier on day 4 than we had on the previous day. Our goal for the day was to find the group of 17 antelope that we were on as light faded the day before. It took a little while, but I finally located them about 3 miles away from where they had been previously. We worked our way over and were able to get within 400 yards with the majority of the antelope bedded. After a 30 minute wait or so they began to get up and feed to our right circling around us. At this point there was only one buck with horns left in the group and he only had one horn. I told Kaitlin it was up to her and she said she was fine with shooting Him because she only had one day left and bucks with horns were getting harder to come by. They kept circling around us until they were all the way behind us feeding their way along. Finally the buck stopped at 370 yards and Kaitlin was ready with the gun on the tripod. She squeezed the trigger and the buck dropped. Kaitlin had her first antelope.

We made our way over to him to get him broke down. He was not a big buck, but she was happy so I was happy and we snapped some pics and got the meat back to the truck.

We continue to hunt the remainder of that day and located multiple other groups of antelope and even made a really good long stalk on a group of 10 that ended up not having a buck with horns in the group. The wind was so bad that I couldn’t get my spotter steady when I found them so we just decided to go have a closer look. I think we ended up seeing just a couple smaller bucks that day but a lot of antelope overall. At this point, I was the only one of the three with a tag left, and I was beginning to think I might have to just shoot a big doe in order to punch my tag. I could extend my hunt an extra day or two if needed, but I was hoping to punch that tag so I could head on to my next hunt. I was confident I could kill an antelope but I didn’t have high confidence that I could find a good buck.
