My step-father killed a three-legged muley several years ago. This buck was missing a back leg right at the hock. It was completely healed and didn't seem to bother him too much. The difference in the hind quarters was pretty amazing! The good side looked like he had been working out with Arnold S! The antler on the opposite side of the injury was just a two inch corkscrew-shaped spike. I've also seen one other three-legged buck killed in the same area. Around here, the first hay cutting occurs around the same time the does are fawning. Many fawns are hit while laying in the fields during the cuttings. I suspect this is the way these two lost their legs.
