When you’ve missed all your draws

i feel like i got skunked, but it wasn't all bad

i applied for 1 colorado 3rd season deer tag and got it and i applied for 3 wyoming tags and missed

but i'm actually 1 for 3, because applying for two doe fawn antelope tags in the same unit was really only like missing out on one tag in terms of only having one name in the hat

i'm still pretty chapped about how many special draws for pronghorn in wyoming crept a point, especially chapped mine did. but i live in colorado, i should still have two limited rifle elk tags and a bear tag (or two bear tags) coming my way.

Until last week I was on a 6 year stretch of not drawing a single tag that didn't have 100% draw odds. I applied for many tags with 10-30% odds, too. It was starting to get really old watching people around me drawing and my wife was getting sick of my moping around the house for a day after every state posted their draw results. Then, out of the blue, I hit a deer tag with <2% odds. I guess that's why we play this game. I have a feeling the droughts are only going to get longer with the way things are going.

Picked a great year to draw nothing through June 1st, so I could switch gears and focus on burning Oregon pronghorn & deer points to exit their 2 1/2% NR quota system. I needed to cut the fat out of my application schedule. Got that job done, and two hunts out of it as well.

It was a tough year for me in the draws but finally drew a deer tag with one of my last apps.

This is exactly my scenario, minus the 2% deer tag! Glad to see someone is breaking out of a slump. I apply for actual tags in 6-7 states and points in 1-2 every year. I've sadly missed on so many of the 20-40% odds tags. When you line out three of them in the same year you feel optimistic going into it that you'll be hunting at least one tag, easy to mope around after another year of striking out... so here i am again. Luckily I jumped on Idaho OTC deer before they were gone.

Shifting focus to OTC Bear and Barbary Sheep.

Trying to secure permission for private land deer tag.

Planning on a lot of upland this year as well.

I went 4/29 with 2 draws left to go. I should hopefully draw one of those so I should be 5/31. Turning my CO elk tag back in bc I can’t make it work with my schedule. Maybe squeeze in an otc whitetail hunt too in Kentucky or Arkansas. I’ll do my normal otc stuff here at home(deer, bear, ducks, small game). Also, I have an epic dream hunt in January if Covid will allow me to fly. It should be an amazing hunting season! Good luck to everyone on your hunts!!!

Struck out on all of my draws (elk x 3, oryx x 1), but luckily got in early on an OTC elk tag.
Fortunately here at home I have some of the best whitetail hunting around and a herd of squirrels that desperately needs thinned out, and locals rivers filled with good fishing. It'll do.
