If we are being honest, "most" aren't paying attention to what is going on in the world. And ... if they paying attention a bit, they read/hear the out of context quotes and material and believe it.

Personally, I'd rather govt officials get things done. I can deal with the off the wall quotes. Of course, if you don't like what's being done, that's a different issue.
