Larimer County resident captures rare video of bear taking down elk

A Colorado camper captured rare footage of a black bear hunting and killing a cow elk at a reservoir in Larimer County.

The elk are like flies there. Walk right into the concrete plant in loveland. I have videos i shot from the cab of a loader while working on the chimney hollow reservoir construction. Had to actuallly stop my machine to avoid injuring them as they walked across the construction site, every single day. elk are like that. Something uncommon will spook them. When they see it everyday they could care less.

Its amazing to realize how many thousands of acres of elk habitat in larimer county colorado have turned into subdivisions, industrial parks, and reservoirs in the last 20 years. Many many miles. I have videos of them in the front yards of fancy houses eating hay with the two resident horses.

Now thats not to say im against the elk. Just not supprised to see a bear haul one off after seing how docile they are there. More reason to kill bears. They make great sausage!

I wouldn't say "only" kill elk calves. I would say black bear successfully killing mature elk is still a small minority of predation on elk. It happens some but not a lot. Where they would have an impact is predation on calves.

When it comes to bears two words I avoid are "always" and "never." Still, something seems off with that elk. Not too robust. Maybe sick or clipped by a car or carrying an arrow or bullet. I think the bear knows something about the elk that we don't know. What a scene to observe though!

That's what I was noticing. Her back end seems awfully skinny and you can see her collapse on her rear right leg right before the bear gets her.

My son killed a bear that was aged at 18 years. Sometime in those years we surmise an elk kicked him in the face. Healed up broken jaw and broken canine teeth. Smaller front teeth all rearranged. He had probably 5" of fat on him that fall so it wasn't slowing him down much. All that to say, killing adult elk by bears would be a tough gig I think.

Lots going on out there in the world.

Our now retired game warden told a story in my son's Hunter Ed class. He once had to euthanize bear that had a healed hole though it's snout and lower jaw. He was 100% sure it was from a handgun bullet. The bear became a problem bear due to its injury.
