So Brandon did not draw this year. He recieved a phone call about 5 weeks ago and accepted a turned in tag. The hunt was already going and most of the tags had been filled already.
With only 12 points it was a no brainer on accepting. Biggest issue was he and his wife were expecting their first child mid October which by all accounts is the preferred time frame to hunt them due to the rut.
Brandon and his Dad made one bonsai trip down to get eyes on the unit and nearly killed a great ram.
We went down Halloween weekend 2 days ahead of Brandon and did some scouting. When he arrived we were in hunt mode and found 1 of 2 rams we had found. The other was bigger and the same ram they saw a few weeks ago but he crossed the unit boundary and was out of bounds. We didn’t know that until after we killed this ram but it was good to know why we couldn’t find him.
Brandon and his Dad made a great stalk on this ram as my brother and I watched from afar. 2 well placed shots around 225 yards away and the dream hunt was done!

I'm sitting on 23 Utah DBH points. Maybe if I can hang in there another 50-60 years I'll get lucky and pull a tag.

Very nice ram. Glad he was able to take advantage of the last minute opportunity. October seems late for DBS rut. In Colorado, it's late July through September. We will have some lambs hit the ground the last week of January. They are spry as spring chickens by the second week of March.

Interesting. We were told this unit has 2 ruts. One in October and another in November. That is on account of there being both Nevada and Utah DBS in the unit.
I’m new to sheep hunting. Not sure what is fact or lore. I just know that this ram was checking ewes and lip curling like crazy before he was shot.

That's a great use of a turned back tag for sure. Congratulations!
The rut for desert sheep in Utah varies, depending on the unit and herd source. The Native Utah sheep rut generally goes the month of November. In those native sheep units the hunting is often the best just before the season ends. Because Utah has reintroduced sheep from Arizona and Nevada, some units rut in late summer, early fall as well. I'm glad he found one to put a tag on.
