Unit 70 Colorado deer

Hello,

A friend and I drew out this year for 3rd season in unit 70 for deer. Neither of us have been out there before but are looking forward to an awesome experience. Looking into things it sounds like there are a lot of mixed views on the unit. Sounds like plenty of other hunters and guys reporting lots of small bucks and other guys reporting very few deer in areas. We are hoping to at least find some deer to look at. We have no clue where we will end up but are going to spend the whole week out there learning new area and giving it our best. I am curious if anyone is out there for 2nd season and what they are seeing or hopefully harvesting. If anyone is willing to point us in a direction to start that would be awesome. We plan to cover and glass as much area we can that week. Are there any places that stand out that we should be focusing over others? Where is the best place to grab dinner and groceries? are there plenty of gas stations in the area or should we plan to have gas cans just in case? Thanks in advance!

Low elevations consist of sagebrush, some croplands and pastures, willows and cottonwoods. Middle elevations consist of pinyon/juniper forests with sage openings and a great deal of oakbrush, which can be dense and covering entire hillsides. Middle elevations also feature cliffrose, bitterbrush and other browse plants favored by deer, along with firs and quaking aspen patches.

Beards corner area is known for huge bucks during 3rd season. It's a sleeper area that they don't mention online unless you're in a private forum like this one. A couple buddies knocked down some serious bruisers a couple years ago right by the Ee21 and Hh19 rd but they were chained up and had their boots laced tight. They also used their long range setups on their 6.5 CMs with premium European optics so they're pretty elite.
Landowners are generally friendly in this area as most of them don't hunt and just ranch so they'll usually let you corner cross or sometimes hunt if you offer smoked meats and cheeses with a bottle of Old Crow or something similar. Some of the old timers may even ask to ride along which can be a good time. Hide your whiskey though b/c they'll help themselves if they see it. They let us trespass their neighbors property one year which was pretty awesome. We didn't get anything but my hunting partner touched off about 6 times trying for a nice 3point. After that hunt he ditched the 7MM and upgraded to the Creed. Problem solved.

This can me a migration hunt so pray for weather and you may see herds of deer and elk like the settlers saw bison many moons ago. At that point it's like shopping for groceries at the super wal-mart.

Naturita and Norwood have provisions, lodging, and women of the night. If you need to do some casino gaming, Cortez will scratch that itch for you. Mexican food and Indian fry bread are pretty amazing in Cortez if you have an urge for something like that.

If you're feeling adventurous you can go for the rocky mountain oysters in Cortez too. Can't remember the name of the place but someone on here probably does.

It was a fun hunt. We saw lots of deer. Not a lot of big bucks but it was fun sorting through them.
