Turkeys

Mountain birds have worked me over pretty darn good last few weeks. This bird made a dummy of me earlier this week.
Started at 3:15 am this morning. Found him in the dark up on the mountain. Crept within gun range of the roost. Couple very soft calls to let him know he had company. His four hens flew down and walked in to my lap. Shot him at 10 yards.Screenshot_20260516_080913_Gallery.jpgScreenshot_20260516_080934_Gallery.jpg

I finally found time to sneak out this am. Birds are really tight lipped around here as of late. Finally got one interested and worked him over a half hour only to somehow miss with the ol .410…..never happened before and I have no excuse. Tomm is the last day and I’m not messing around; I’m packing the 10 gauge double medicine in the am. As a consolation, I moved 20 pairs of bovine a half mile to their new spring pasture while I was cussing myself on the missed bird.

Youngest daughter talked me into getting her another tag. Hunted this morning had 4 birds going but went the other way. Went to a different farm at 9am bird was gobbling when we got there. Answered every call I made, 200+ gobbles. He stayed 500-600yds away in the woods. Moved around on him setup and he came in after about 30mins in the new spot (400yds out of the woods to the CRP) she shot him at 1pm.20260523_125220.jpg20260523_124532.jpg20260523_123237.jpg20260523_123441.jpg

The pink boots must be her secret.

Running late, but here’s a spring turkey report from north of the border in Ontario.

My 15 year old nephew took his first game of any kind by dropping this mature longbeard on opening morning (April 25). He held his nerve as this longbeard strutted in to our decoy setup - even waiting for the bird to raise his head out of a strut for a better shot opportunity.

I filled a tag of my own about a week later on an afternoon hunt. A lonely tom found my calling irresistible and strutted his way into my decoy setup.

A few close calls for other hunters I took out too. All in all, another great spring.
