Turkeys

Ive had access to a small 20 acre parcel of family owned land for years and Im finally taking advantage of it. This is the first year where I was successful turkey hunting. Last 2 years I shot deer there.

My 8 year old boy is getting ready to shoot his first turkey but hasn't practiced enough yet to say hes ready. So for opening day, we went out and I was the shooter. Before we left at breakfast, he said "I have a feeling we are going to get on today". I love those instincts and told him to listen to them as they are there for a reason.

We got a slightly late start, about 10 min behind schedule, and I only built in an extra 15 min to get under the roost tree before legal shooting light. The turkeys were gobbling loud and crazy when we stepped out of the truck!! I was going to bring chairs but there was no time, so we hustled down the hill and snuck in under the tree. It was legal to shoot when we sat down. View attachment 405157View attachment 405158

This year there were 12 birds in the roost. Last year there was one wise old tom who gave us the slip - he hit the ground on the fence line to another 20 acres we cant hunt and looked back laughing. On that hunt we tried calls, decoys, and a blind. For this hunt, I brought my son and a gun, no blind, no calls, no decoys.

A few minutes passed and all of a sudden a group of 6 flew downhill towards the private hoa that surrounds the 2x 20 acre parcels. They landed in someone's yard. We need them to land on our property and it has a nice open flat section just under the tree with grass where we set up. Another minute passes and then a turkey flies down, landing 10 yards in front of us. It was silhouetted against the hillside so I couldnt see much color, but I saw a decent beard hanging down. I raise my gun and put it below its neck (gun shoots high), no click. Safety's on haha. Amateur hour quickly ended as I flipped it off and drilled the bird. My son looked at me so excited to see a turkey down!!

We wait a few minutes and the bird doesn't move. Mosquitos start bugging us so we move in, collect our bounty, then head over to my sis-in-laws place on the property for second breakfast and coffee. She was also kind enough to take some pics too. View attachment 405160View attachment 405161View attachment 405162
Around a 6" beard and my best turkey to date, not only because of the size, but because it was with my son. Can't wait for him to get his next!!

Beautiful bird! So cool to get him with your son.

Went out this morning to locate. Youth is tomorrow. Heard 1 a ways off gobble. Hens clucking close. Coyote at 50yds. Beautiful morning

Went for a walk on public land this morning with my 2 labs. Lots of roosters around sounding off. Young lab goes on point in some brush.....and a 747 takes flight through the trees. Yep, a turkey, not a pheasant. It sure made a lot of noise. Last Saturday we called this guy in to 19 yards.
