I will second what several others are saying. The old model 24 is hard to beat for a truck gun in one of its many variants. The Savage 42 (its current variation) is also a great choice!
I have both and have gotten to where I like the 42 takedown quite a bit. I put a peep on it instead of the rough sight it came with and its lights out.

I always use a 12 guage with an extra tight choke. That way ca have the pattern hit their head and the rest go over the top. Shot some with a 22 but when they get nervous and start walking it’s hard to hit their little head

410 Pistol. Mountain grouse are not hard off a 4wheeler or (truck window)
It also shoots a 45 long-colt, perfect people stopper too.

I’ve been thinking about one in .300BO. I think it would be fun with a collapsible short stock added on. They are a great price anyway.

Youth 870 20ga

Most of the youth ones I've seen are based on the express line--in my personal experience they need some work to function as smooth as older wingmasters, etc. I have a youth turkey model that needed some honing and smoothing.

Funny you mention that particular shotgun, my Sons hunting buddy has that exact Ithaca 37 he inherited it from a grandparent. It's his truck gun and it's a sweetheart from the 1930's

I picked up a late 60's 37 , 28" modified 16 gauge, for pheasant/prairie birds last year. Long been a fan and they can take abuse and keep on shuckin....

I’ve been thinking about one in .300BO. I think it would be fun with a collapsible short stock added on. They are a great price anyway.

My son does, we reload both 45LC and 410. It's hard to get a shot shell to work well with a barrel with a twist. We load it without a shot cup, only the gas seal, the patteran is WAY better. A slug shoots well, and the 45s, we hard cast a 303gr slug, and it does very fine out to around 40 yards... BUT all I can say is HANG ON TO IT. WITH BOTH HANDS. We have a red dot on it.
