Any recommendations on a stand for big cottonwood trees? I'm Looking for cheap but also something that will work on a tree that you can't get your arms around

IME, the various ladder stands are the easiest to put up on really big trees. With a second person to help hold it while the other fastens the straps. Either way, wear a harness when hanging it.

I prefer the ones with the platforms that go all the way to the tree as I store gear underneath the seat. Go with a sling style seat. They are much more comfortable than the bench style IMO regardless of how thick the pad is.

I agree with 1 pointer that a ladder is much easier to put up in a tree like you describe. A hanger can be done but you might have to add to the tree strap or come up with your own. Also you will have the same issue with setting the climbing ladder or sticks. Often in a tree like you describe I end up using screw in steps to get up to a place I can get my hanger strap around. As to weather a cotton wood is safe for holding screw in steps I can't answer that. If it's that wide up high I'd just go with a ladder.

Either a ladder, or put a tripod stand up next to it. I've got a 17' tripod stand, awesome to spend a day in.
