Well folks if the rumors are true Weatherby will be kicking off New Cartridge Season tomorrow 🙄. There is speculation as to what it is but the interwebs are suggesting possibly a 257 RPM. Stay tuned.

Interesting. When I visited Weatherby in September, I asked them about future RPM offerings. They responded without ever really answering me.

So it’s a 25 creedmoor that is going to come at WBY prices… so innovative
25 creedmoor plus 250 fps.

It’s actually about the most obvious gap in a market without gaps. Not a single saami cartridge out there meant to push the new 130+ class quarterbore bullets fast.

I think it’ll quickly surpass 6.5 and 338 in popularity.

257 wby-ish in that little six lug action is intriguing.

I’ve read some where the potential 25 prc is finicky, maybe weatherby figured something out.

I've found the 25-6.5PRC to be a delight: https://www.hunttalk.com/threads/developing-loads-for-the-25-6-5prc.331391/. 25-6.5RPM would be about identical performance to the PRC, but I don't know if I would want to deal with the rebated rim.

Now, I'd be intrigued if they were releasing a 257-300WBY. 127gr. Hammer would probably be somewhere north of 3500fps.

72 grain h20 capacity 257 RPM.

Basically equal to what a 257 SAUM would be. A hair larger than a 257-280AI but in a shorter fatter case that plays better with standard action lengths/magazines.

Should be close to 270 and 6.5 PRC in recoil but a little faster and better in wind with all but the heaviest 6.5 pills at a long ways out.

I think i should eclipse 6.5 RPM in popularity near instantly.

"Finicky" is just a reference to overbore cartridges in general from hornady. Highly doubt the slightly more overbore 257 RPM is going to be less inherently "finicky" than a well spec'd 25-6.5 PRC. Weatherby seemingly hasn't concerned itself with such details in the past with very overbore cartridges and extremely long throats with bullets jumping a mile.

I'm in favor of just about any new quarterbore but this seems a little meh if and when the 25PRC is standardized.

This kind of touches on my frustration with the current state of the ammo industry. I think new cartridges are cool but I'd really love to see a pivot back towards bullet design and innovation personally.

Not a perfect comparison, but Weatherby claims 3350fps with a 107 Hammer HBC in a 24" barrel. I'm at 3480 with a 95gr. HHT with the PRC in a 20" barrel. Weatherby claims 3000fps with a 133gr. Berger; I'm at 2993 with a 127gr. HHT after initial load development and other powders to try. The 25RPPM will be DOA as soon as the 25PRC is legitimized.

Weatherby should have gone with an updated .257WBY if they really wanted something that would catch fire.

I bet this ends up dead with a heap of other cartridges.

Theyd have made it more interesting at 6mm or 22 imho.

Disagree. 22 creedmoor is already a hot rod, not much more juice to squeeze out of that option. They already have a 240 wby that’s a laser and offered with 7.5 twist. Plus, lots of weatherby fudds probably don’t think 6mm are big enough for men to hunt big game with.

There are zero fast quarterbores tailored to the new high bc pills which IMO are a better balance of weight and BC than the 6.5 140 class bullets.

How much more is it than 25-06 though, really?

Common offered fast twist rate i guess is what changes things, ultimately.

It’s not that much bigger. It’s the ability to shoot bullets that 10 twist 25-06s can’t that make it notably different.
Case capacity is within a few percent but, to your point, the boon is a smarter case design and twisted correctly to shoot the high BC bullets. Seems like Weatherby is kneecapping themselves by only offering one true high BC projectile (133gr. Berger) in factory loadings. Everything else is 107-117gr., which should probably do fine in a 1:10 twist.

Edited to add: @nhenry is beating the crap out of Weatherby's numbers with the 107 HBC in a 25-06. They claim 3350 with the 107 HBC, he's getting a smooth 3600 with the 109 HBC.
