Threading and chopping a barrel?

Just quick high school algebra says a 30% drop in velocity really only works with what everybody else in the world is seeing if we’re talking traditional archery speeds…

Short barrel chopped rifles shine for mountain hike in hunts light, compact, easy carry, great suppressor balance. Sporter 6" 300 WSM sneaky sneak power, quick runs to tundras.

Cons 30% less velocity energy 180gr 3,000 fps at 25 860 fps at 6 . Less wind resistance in long shots, slightly lower energy at distance, needs proper threading specs.

I’ve never even seen a 10% loss. Maybe 5-6%

From my experience I was losing about 50 fps per inch of barrel. This was with a 20" in 6.5 CM compared to a 22" 6.5 CM. With all of my .308 win ladder tests and load development with an 18" barrel I was also seeing 50 fps per inch compared to book speeds.

I will probably not go shorter than 18" unless I am making an SBR in 8.6 blk or 300 blk.

Well I think I’ll go down to 20”. But smith seems adamant that even at 20” I need to have a collar. I’m not a fan of that. I think it’ll look like s*** but I’m also not a smith.

A collar in order to make enough shoulder to seat the suppressor against? I had to do that one of my Tikka custom jobs and you really don't notice it when a suppressor is mounted.

I’ve got an 18” 6.5 creedmoor that gets 2800fps. So if it was 24” I’d be getting over 3640fps with a 130 tmk?

Are you comparing 2 different rifles? Ive not witnessed it much (just got my chrono) but ive heard new barrels speed up, some barrels are just slower, some chambers are slightly looser.

Hard to compare unless youre chopping off the same barrel, on the same day (or day with same weather) if your loads are heat sensitive

Book speeds are typically on a 24"

Are you comparing 2 different rifles? Ive not witnessed it much (just got my chrono) but ive heard new barrels speed up, some barrels are just slower, some chambers are slightly looser.

Hard to compare unless youre chopping off the same barrel, on the same day (or day with same weather) if your loads are heat sensitive

The 6.5s are separate rifles. The 308 came with an 18". Granted I probably only have about 180 rounds through it but it is consistently 300 fps slower than book speeds.

Same thing with the 20" 6.5 only have about 120 rounds through it so there is still time for it to speed up.

And saving people in the car or anywhere with substantial background noise from the endless - "what" that kills a conversation and frustrates both sides of a marriage.

Suppressors are probably the best marriage advice on a hunting forun.

I have very limited suppressor experience on bolt rifles, but 20” with a light over the barrel suppressor seems like a sweet spot for overall length while trying to preserve velocity. If I get my .308 threaded I’ll keep it to 20”. You would only add about 4” with the right setup.

Not saying 30% is right or wrong. Funny you can throw around numbers and only say Google search. I've heard people say it's closer to 50fps. I havent done it so couldn't say. I also had someone report cutting a barrel down and getting better velocity.
