Montana is an open range state. That does not extend to interstates though. I hit two cows on the freeway just west of Whitehall and my insurance did not pay out.

Dang I’d like to see the language on that claim rejection. Speed limit 80 on the freeway but it’s an open range state so driver be aware you’re not covered if you hit a cow on the there rather than an elk? One more strike against insurers in the mountain states.

The claim was covered. Sorry if I didn’t state that clearly.

My damage was covered.
The rancher was not reimbursed to my knowledge.
I believe my insurance went after the rancher’s insurance because his cattle were on the interstate.
I don’t know how it all washed out but my pickup was repaired and I only paid my deductible.
