In this particular tribe (the name of the tribe escapes me at the moment), women with the largest lip discs get the best men, the bravest warrior i.e. At one point in history this form of adornment was imposed on the women by the men in order to prevent these women from being stolen by neighboring tribes. Although this is less of an issue in the modern world, to this day the men of this tribe won't even consider marrying a girl who does not have a lip disc.

P.S. Moosie if you did do this, you just might attract a burly african warrior of your very own.

Mo.....you are right about the original intent was to make the Mursi (that's the tribe you forgot) women appear ugly to the slavers so they would pass them over. The ugly part really comes when they take the lip plate out and the lip hangs down to their breasts. Only the women slit their lower lip....the men elongate their earlobes (Moosie, you might consider this procedure so you can use a larger pan!) Anyway....they live in Ethiopia in case you are interested. They fire their lip plates like pottery, and if the woman really wants to appear attractive she uses ornate facial markings to off set her lip. It gives "lip smackin' good" a whole new meaning.

Is it just me or does me thinks thats an odd way to tote your turkey slate around ??

I mean it helps to keep one hand free when you're working on them gobblers, but really...there's gotta be a better way ??!!
