The rut.

When is the rut around Salmon, Idaho?? We usually start our hunt October 15 and we will still hear the bulls bugle occasionaly however this year we got drawn for a controlled hunt and it starts October 1. Will the rut be ending right around then, be in full swing, just starting or what?? Also, do you think it would be smart to use cow calls around this time of the year.

TK, My guess is that the rut will still be going pretty strong on 10/1 in your area. I think there's a good chance you'll be hearing bugling. And cow calls will probably be effective on the less dominant bulls.

I've never elk hunted around Salmon, though. There must be somebody else here at HT who knows more about that area.

Either way, you should always have a cow call with you. They come in handy lots of ways.
