Hi All,
Curious on when you all think I should go on my cow elk hunt in WY. The cow elk hunt starts early to mid October, same as the type 1 bull tag, then a week goes by and deer season opens. The hunt will take place around 6200-8800 feet of elevation. I have heard the first week is very busy even if it's a limited entry for both bull and cow tags. I have heard all the 1st week pressure can be OK to have elk get bumped around off private, but also a little nuts.

Questions is, when do I go? Should I go the 3rd week, avoiding 1st week of elk and then 1st week of deer? Will the elk be stuck on private (I know hard to say) not getting bumped around as much? Or do I go 1st week, and hunt with the majority with elk getting bumped around maybe more?

Thanks.

The last time I did a hunt like that a type 4 in SW Wyoming we went first week. There was definitely a lot of pressure and guys flying all over on UTV's. We also filled both of our tags in 5 days. We were able to find ways to use the pressure to our advantage. I know a guy who showed up a week after we left to hunt the same tag in the same area. He described a much harder hunt than the one I'd had the week prior.

Hunt the first week. Let the other guys push elk around and to you. The only thing you are really competing for is camp sites. Mid October the elk may still be bugling a bit, kind of helps to indicate where the elk are located. Been on cow hunts in prior years and have had guys totally ignore elk bugling across the drainage. Duh, there are elk over there, go find them. Can't tell me with 100 certainty that if you hear a bugle and you are hunting cows, that there are no cows in the vicinity of that bugle.
