The official 2025 Wyoming elk hunt for Dave N thread.

16 pages and we’re still 2 weeks out. I hope the hunt lives up to the build-up. If nothing else, I’ve had a squirrel sneaking into my shop that we can document an epic adventure trying to eradicate.
Should I bring a shotgun, or will my .270 do the job? ;)

He is from the midwest. There is no precise sighting in required. We take our rifle out the week before we need it, toss a paper plate out at 100, shoot er two, tree times tops. Make sure we hit it all times and call er good
I actually loaded all of the details into a ballistics calculator. 700ft and my temps and humidity compared to 7000ft and their temps and humidity does make a little difference. My ability to shoot probably wipes out any of that! You're not wrong. If I can hit within 2 inches of where I want I call it a success! ;) I will be noting where I'm hitting here and compare to the chart for gits and shiggles. I'll also have @Wildabeest take me to where I can check it out there before it counts.

You are now close enough...start taking pictures to chronicle this (mis?) adventure! You will thank yourself when you are sitting in your recliner this winter snacking on elk jerky and can start looking at pictures well before the trip starts.

Got in my final round of shooting yesterday evening. Picked up a suppressor in the end of July but this was the first time I was able to shoot with it. Looks like my load still works. This was my last three-shot group at 100 after some small adjustments for impact. Also shot out to 500 and liked the results. Can't blame any misses on the gun now, just the guy pulling the trigger. Really starting to get excited to get to camp, hang out with the crew, and spend some time in the woods.

Camp food prep day. Venison Italian sausage lasagna going into the freezer and some venison roast going into a brine for a few days to make pastrami later this week.

Guess I should have taken pictures. I have a good sized chunk of smoked brisket in the freezer and a couple gallons of chili frozen. Chocolate chip cookies later next week. Trying to decide how much fish to bring. Figured cod would be harder to screw up than halibut.

Truck washed and oil changed today. Hunting clothes packed and ready to load. Daily hunt snacks are boxed and ready. Rifle checked and in the case. Tag and conservation stamp are both signed. Main and spare batteries are charged for my headlamp and spare batteries ready for my spare light. I'll throw some basic tools in the truck, just in case. Now if I could just get some sleep at night I might feel better! Damn, I'm tired!

This pic made me hungry and I ate an hour ago

Did I miss reading where Dave was taking some of his famous home made whitetail salami to camp? If not, he must have used up all of last years venison which is a shame. Or he could have been just too darn busy!

I haven't made any for a while. Not since I lost my place to hunt. IF an elk comes home with me I'll make some again. My recipe was pretty good but @BuzzH brought some elk salami to Alaska that was awesome. I'll have to see if he'll share the recipe with me.
