If he was in SE MN that is a slug area. The rifle zone is Northern MN. You can also use blackpowder with scopes or crossbows during the slug season. In the rifle zone you can use rifles plus all of the above. Great deer! I still have room in my freezer for does so I am not done yet!

Thanks for the comments everybody! Yes, all the firearms deer were taken with shotgun. As mentioned, rifles are not allowed where I hunt. I do have a muzzleloader, but I have not taken a deer with it yet!
