The Eberhart Experiment

@Bowhuntrben Just curious where the low bar is at? Also curious how many qualifying p&y animals have you personally killed?
125" net may not be considered a "giant" but still not extremely easy to get within bow range of said "low bar" whitetail buck.
There is a reason why the minimum score for p&y is lower than b&c.

I hunt SE MN, and 125 is a low bar for the particular property I hunt. I don't have any in the record book as it's not my thing. I only measure out of curiosity and to have some sort of comparison. In just the last 5 years, I have personally taken 7 or 8 that would be big enough for that category. I couldn't tell you how many I've passed up. Most of these were taken with a shotgun since I have very little time to hunt these days and prefer the gun. That said, our stands are all set up for archery, so they are almost all well within gimme archery range anyway. Back when I actually got to spend a decent amount of time hunting, I killed more and bigger bucks with a bow than gun due to the shear amount of time you have to get it done and how easy they can be to pattern in the early season. Archery really isn't any more difficult than shotgun where I hunt. I am not trying to add marks for each P&Y buck I kill and am not really eager to go kill another one most of the time, otherwise that number could easily be much higher. This is just me hunting one state with pretty minimal effort. I am very fortunate to have a good place to hunt, and some people have it even easier than me. Point being, I don't know what the particular properties are like that Eberhart hunts, but the number of P&Y bucks doesn't mean a whole lot on its own.

This is true for me in north central MN as well. We have some great hunting property where I'm at and I have no desire to shoot a 125" whitetail. I've even killed enough 130s to be passing on those. They're not going to get to 140, 150, and 160" if you shoot them when they're 120-130!

He claims to have killed 35 P&Y bucks in Michigan, and 22 out of state. Yet he has 0 listed with Pope & Young... The more I look into the guy, the fishier it gets. He works w/ Scentlok, he's expected to push it. I don't believe someone who says "you can fool a deer's nose", because you can't!

I'd guess my grandpa has around 30 P&Y bucks, but he didn't care about the score or record books. He also wasn't a scent control weirdo. Just had specific stands for specific winds. Most successful deer hunter I knew!

You've never had a deer downwind and not gotten away with it?
I have had deer downwind and gotten away with it. The vast majority of the time, you don't get away with it. If there is a scent to smell, they'll smell it. If they are downwind and they don't smell you, thermals were probably pulling your scent up and over their heads. Their survival depends on being aware. They're more aware than any human in existence.
