The classic magnums - will they see a renaissance?

I'm an obsolete/oddball type of person.

There are a number of cartridges based on the 7X57 Mauser case, circa 1898. And they are still used today.
The 375 H&H magnum is the grandfather of all the belted magnums.

But you don't need a belt to have a magnum. But I've never had an issue with a belted cartridge.

I have a number of "lighter" cartridges that I regularly shoot and hunt with.
250 Savage, 257 Roberts, 257 Roberts AI, 25-06, 7mm-08AI, 284 Win, 280 Rem.

But I also have a few magnums that I regularly shoot and hunt with also.
25WSSM, 257 WBY, 7mm Rem Mag, 7mm WBY.

Yeah well some of us can shoot a magnum into Itty bitty groups. mtmuley
With proper load development I don't have much issue getting a 1-1.5" group with any of my magnums. Perfectly acceptable for hunting rifles.
But I don't regularly shoot them for groups. Mostly hitting different sized steel targets at distance.

I do know some people using magnums for mid to long range competition.
Most common are a form of either the 7mm RSAUM or 7WSM.
But there are others that when the wind picks up using a 300 Win Mag.

Three, 20 shot strings with a magnum are punishing on the gun and the shooter. But it helps when the gun weighs 17lbs.

.338 Win Mag will always be in the rotation, especially when hunting on the left side of the state. For those of us with kids that hunt and shoot, we can hopefully keep the love alive, pass them along . Those without will have to decide what to do with their collections. I don’t see a renaissance occurring because of ammunition and components costs and availability.

A friend of mine, who is president of our long range club down here owns a 6.5 creed and he tbinks the 6.5 Swede is more inherently accurate. Yeppers, his opinion. He's done a heck of a lot of long range shooting. Im a babe compared to Bruce.

For elk, I think the .300 WM is the best cartridge for one heck of a tough animal. These new calibers may be good for target shooting, but for a lot of inexperienced shooters we have these days, I wonder how many wounded animals die in the woods. Hunting is different than the range.

Even if Im a military sniper, Id much rather have a .25-06 or a .270 than a 6.5 CM. As far as Im concerned, corruption in the military came up with the 6.5cm. Strictly my taje on things. If it looks like a cow, moos like a cow, gives milk like a cow, its a cow.

And as far as recoil is concerned, my response is PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE. NO MUZZLEBRAKES. Stop blowing everybody's ears out at the range. Ya cant hunt with headphones, besides makin' ya look stupid. I can see a supressor. Even my .338 WM aint that bad. And if youre focused on the animal, you are oblivious to recoil.

Yes, what is the connection between 6.5CM and .mil?

I agree…lol. What are we talking about here. I have shot a .300 WSM for years and it’s a “boom, kill stick”. Should I have a complex about it?

I don't this magnums will make a comeback. I think the trend of better quality rifles with less recoil, better bullets, accuracy and performance will continue but I believe the improvements will be very marginal.
Magnums will always have their fans so they will not perish. I own two. No plans to use them on a regular basis but they aren't eating much in the safe.

Considering how many elk I've seen die to .270 Win and below at distances out to 600 yards, mags are dead, at least to me.

I'd be shocked if there really was a rennaisance, but I'm thankful to have a pre 64 300 H&H and a custom .358 Norma mag in my arsenal!
I agree with you. Still shooting my German Weatherby Mark V in 270 mag that I bought in 1965. Can’t count how many harvests with that gun. Also have a 358 Norma mag that I built on a pre 64 action. Still shooting them both at 73.
