2 buddies & I threw together a OYOA late season SD pheasant hunt. We had 3 days to hunt & only one contact in the area we picked to hunt. We met some really nice people & were able to get more property to hunt than we had time for. I was happily suprised at the land access. I always thought SD was a pay to play thing for pheasants. The weather was nice but the birds were tough. The birds were in huge groups in thick cattail swamps. With only 3 hunters & 2 dogs it was tough, but we ended up w 14 roosters. There still are some really nice people who will allow hunting on their farms. Thank You :)

Finding birds can be rough this time of year. By now they are so wild on public lands it is hard to get shots. Glad you had success! I run into out of staters every year who have a story almost identical to you about the quality of public pheasant land.

Numbers were said to be up 18% this year, not sure if the continued drought will have an impact on them for coming seasons.

Pheasant numbers were good as usual in the south central part of the state. The northern part of the state got hit hard the last couple of years with snow, then spring rains, then drought. Just get away further than 100miles from the Sioux Falls area and you will probably find a few more birds and a lot less hunters.

boof is right, birds this time of year are harder to find and get a shot at, but I like this time of year better than any other due to the challenge. Congrats on a successful hunt!
