In all seriousness the Driftless area is becoming a popular retirement area for chicagoans, southeast Wisconsin folks and people from the twin cities. For many years people have went to the north woods and left this area alone. Our home prices and land prices are still low comparatively, but they have doubled in 10 years. Our wages are not keeping up. I would be getting while the getting is good.

Wisconsin residents should bitch. A first time NR Wisco hunter can hunt dam near cheaper than they can as a resident in their home state.

Also not to get political but Wisco has taken some hits in funding for public lands. The Knowles stewardship was huge.

So what is game warden college? My alma mater had this Conservation LE bachelor’s degree and some of those kids did go into regional warden jobs. Seen a few on Northwoods Law. Others went cop or corrections or ranger. Would you be open to Federal as well as State wildlife LE jobs or rural deputy openings? Some states put inmates on the fire line. First season of “Alone” the winner Alan Kay, exceptional outdoorsman, was a Georgia firefighter corrections officer out there in the woods with inmates. Alaska troopers have blue shirts and brown shirts and they can cross over and back again. My point is that there’s a whole spectrum of LE jobs out there that’ll get you in the woods and working adjunct to conservation law that aren’t only warden jobs. There’s this Navy man here, @hank4elk, who could tell you how it was.

Most CO/warden jobs...you go where they send you. Some states have their own academy and you get asisgned a station after completing it. Check it out before getting too deep into hoping for a particular area.

Lots of attractive places for an outdoorsman outside of the driftless area in WI. I'd lean towards the Hayward/Minocqua,/Eagle Rver area myself.

You know there are state wildlife jobs, right? With no age entry limits...at least Ive never heard of any. There was a lot of competion for them from former federal folks for awhile. Don't know if that has settled down though.

Why not somewhere in the Sandhills of western Nebraska, or somewhere in South Dakota? A lot closer jumping off point to get back west. I always thought that somewhere around Belle Fouche would be a perfect spot for someone in your situation

I've considered Nebraska, but the pay is quite a bit less and property taxes get pretty high in some counties. I haven't put any thought into the Dakotas.

MN pays COs well and has good benefits.

In WI, you pick your top 3 spots of the areas they have open when you get your initial job offer before starting the academy. So you have some sense of where you will be going.

MN is too liberal for where I want to raise my kids. Im sure they have good areas, but not somewhere I am interested in moving to.
