Another benefit of Wisconsin is the college. I am service connected DAV, so after 5 years of residency, my kids schooling is paid for. Thats huge.

I grew up in Montana. Left in 2009 for the USMC, haven't been back since. It got too expensive for me as well, but I do miss it. I've spent my whole life in MT, ID, and WY. Life changes though.

I havent waterfowl hunted in about 8 years, that would be awesome to see. Ill have to get into ice fishing, its miserable in wyoming with 30 mph winds, so I don't do it here.

You might want to experience ice fishing in WI. I'll take the Wyoming wind over the biting, humid, lake effect cold. I'm tough when it comes to cold, but that cold is something you have to suffer through to really appreciate how brutal it is. Definitely buy an ice house of some sort if you take up that sport in WI. No need for one in WY or MT...but I ice fished about a week there, my buddy and I were about the only 2 on the ice without an ice house. Borderline "fun".

Absolutely. I haven’t ice fished in anything more than a hooded sweatshirt in years, but I ain’t about to be sitting on a bucket out in the cold either.

I move too much and I've seen enough ice house ripping across the ice headed toward Nebraska at 50 mph to not bother with one.

Flip-overs are my preference for mobility, but they are no fun in high winds (none of the portables are).

I live in Iowa but I can see Prairie du chien Wi from my house. The area between lacrosse and prairie du chien is very big in organic, sustainable farming, small farms. The schools outside of lacrosse are small, but good. Viroqua, would be a good area to look at. Lacrosse is big enough to have everything you need but small enough to not have big city problems. If you are interested in being a conservation officer you may have to go somewhere less desirable for a year or 2 before you can transfer to the area you want to be.

Im a fib but have plenty of friends and coworkers that are north of the state line. The SW corner of the state is very nice. I would move there in a hearbeat if I weren't settled where I am. Realistically finding the property you talk about will cost you about the same as Wyoming. The land may be cheaper, but taxes are probably higher. I would not expect a significant difference from Wyoming. But if you want to try something different go for it. Maybe do an "out east" hunting trip this fall. I bet you can get doe tags at the minimum to give it a go. Bring your camper out a few times in summer. You never know until you explore for yourself.

Top notch schools in most cases. Very involved sports programs in most cases. Western Wisconsin is nothing but farmland - cornfields and soybean fields, woods and ponds and creeks and lakes and rivers. IDEAL whitetail hunting.
Keep the camper. Use it to explore the state with your family. Wisconsin's boundaries, locals say, are: "Lake Superior to the north, Lake Michigan to the south. The Mississippi River to the west and some unspeakable toilet to the south" (the land of FIBs.)
The BIGGEST whitetails are known to all to be in Buffalo County. But with all the cornfields, all of western Wisconsin produces big whitetails, just not the monsters of Buffalo County. My brother shot a 250 lb. 10 pointer in Trempeleau County last year (227 lbs. field dressed):


HEALTHY whitetails everywhere.
