So all of you guys that have posted pedestal mounts over the last few months got me thinking that I wanted to build my own. So here is the old barn wood that i found. It is just in the concept phase at the moment, but I plan on keeping you up to date on how it turns out. My goal is to take an antelope worthy of the pedestal this fall, and put it on there this spring. I would love to see anyone elses pedestals for ideas.

How heavy of Antelope are you planning on shooting? I am guessing those old beams should be able to support the entire herd......

Word of caution, be careful sawing that old wood. See if you can find a metal detector that you can look for old nails and other embedded metal.

And always wear your safety glasses.

Jose, thanks for the advice, will do.

I plan on using the wood for several projects, but the first step is going to be ripping the boards down.

sreekers...Jose is right about the nails/wire in old wood...matter of fact he knew a guy that new a guy that had his head taken right off in a sawmill accident by a tree spike...or something like that- right Jose?? ;)

...all kidding aside, good luck with your project, keep us posted on the finished product as I'm interested in doing the same thing myself hump

you could almost use one of those posts as-is. I've seen a pronghorn pedestal in the past that just used an old fence post, with habitat. Looks pretty good. I'll see if I can find a photo later. Got a meeting now...

Thanks Oak, would love to see it. I have a picture in my mind, but have to put it on paper to see how it will actually work. There is enough wood there that I think I can get a few projects out of it, may try more than one idea.

I can't find the one I was thinking of. I think it was on MM, but ????

Here are a couple I did find. Not the best taxidermy. I think they could be made a lot better. Your posts might be too big for something like this.

I like that bottom one a lot. Might try building more of a box on the bottom though. Got plenty of wood to make it work. Heading out in the morning to go after the first of two!

Update on the Pedestal

Here is what I have built so far. Its going to be a pretty big pedestal, but that is allright, first one i have built so far.

I still plan to use some red paint in some of the cracks on the wood to make it just a little less rustic.

I am going to talk to a Taxidermist this week to see how he would mount my antelope on there. Depending on what he says I may start to build the rocks and such.

If my second tag is filled by another goat worth of mounting I am going to try the post style you posted oak.

Nice! If it is big enough, just make it so that you can add a second 'lope when you get one you like. I'll attach some examples of what I'm talking about...

Oak, those are some sweet pedestals. That is actually a very good idea, I like the first goat one, might even make the first a doe though, with my buck on top.
