Spotting game at long distance. Is there a trick to doing it?

Good optics with solid window mount and tripod. Then practice.

Steady hand or steady rest. If you have hands that shake consider 8X over 10X. Pan, stop, look inside the FOV, repeat. You will see more while stopped than panning.

X2, at this to the points I mentioned above. Having a tripod helps immensely, many times while scanning through the FOV I've caught movement at the opposite edge I was looking at.
