Snow Geese

Some snow geese poured into one of the grass fields this evening. No small game license or duck stamp for me this year, so the only shooting was with the camera.

Yes, these are Pacific flyway birds. I farm in the lower Columbia basin of Washington, about 8 miles from the Columbia River. The birds usually find feeding areas closer to the river, but for a couple of days there has been a large group of snows coming into this grass field.

When I managed our City’s utilities we bought into a wind project up by Bickleton on the gorge… the amount of birds in those fields every spring would just kill me!

Oh man, the Skagit valley is a usually LOADED with them in the winter. In college I made a trip down that way during February for a research project, it was the first time I was ever shocked at the shear number of a wildlife in an area. They sound was deafening, and the moved like a flock of blackbirds or starlings.
