I hunt elk in Montana, and have never done a goose or duck hunt. Was wondering when snow goose season was in S.D. so I could maybe catch it on the way home. Any recommendations for an outfitter? Never done it before. Do you have to use nontoxic shot? What's the daily limit? Are they good to eat?

Yes non toxic.

If fall they're are major restrictions, spring season is what most people prefer for them. No plug requirements, can use electric callers and any other electronic to get them to come in. No bag limit either

Did a spring hunt in 2024 in SD, it was fun.
I went through a case of shells and never fired my gun on the last day of a 3 day hunt. Did get checked by a CO or game and fish in the field. Definitely recommend 3 days incase of bad weather.
We are trying to go every other year from here on out.

I pheasant hunt in north central part of SD. Typically, I don't see that many birds the third Saturday of October. Two weeks later we do see some. I have done the spring season and can mirror the other comments around 3+ days. I have done the conservation season in both Mound City Missouri and around Watertown SD. We are looking to go back to SD this spring. We have had a few years where the outfitters would call and cancel because the birds were already through or called early to see if we could change the dates to get on birds. The conservation season is a ton of fun.

You missed the application deadline for fall waterfowl hunting in SD this year. It’s a lottery for non residents.

Spring can be good but timing is key. You really get what you pay for when it comes to snow goose guides. They are notorious for being miscreants. I’m sure some guides try to stay on birds, but most of the time they just throw out 2k socks in a cow pasture and hunt it until the birds have blown thru.
