Small Bullets (.224) and BIG game

After I saw Tyler Freel's video about shooting his moose with a 22 ARC I started to dive a little deeper in the small caliber conversation. Maybe I am a wuss or maybe I'm just starting to learn more things the older I get but I don't like recoil. I have a 7 mag that has relatively low recoil but it weighs 12 pounds and I am tired of carrying it around. After shooting Hammer bullets last year I have decided that I want a 22 ARC or 22 Creed. I like the idea of fast low recoil rounds. Having a bullet with a solid shank and 3 to 5 petals coming off making a wound channel gives me confidence to hunt with it. With ALL of that said though, I still can't see myself shooting an elk with a .224. I'm sure it would work but I'd rather put a bigger hole in them.

The game changer for small calibers IMO is heavy for caliber fragile target bullets because they create big wound channels. Going with controlled expansion bullets in smaller calibers for sure works but from what I’ve seen there’s a difference on game.

I might pack my .223 for bears this spring, it’s short and light and barely noticeable when strapped to a pack. Would be a great rifle to pack around while looking for elk antlers if nothing else.

Especially for black bears I think there’s a ton of merit to the small caliber explosive bullets. They’re all about doing the maximum damage to the lungs in a relatively small target for the size of the animal.

I want to try some of those 70 grain Accubonds too for the critters that I’m more concerned with meat loss. I’d hate to nuke the entire shoulder on a whitetail or antelope with the TMKs. Hopefully the Accubonds act like the .223 fusions/gold dots (which I have used a bunch and are phenomenal).

@Carl and others - I ordered some 70 accubonds. I have yet to find any real details on how that one does. BC is not excellent but I’ve had great luck with AB in other cartridges. Due to length will be a non issue in the magazine box. I’m not sure yet with the 75eldm. Know anybody that’s used the little 70ABs?

When you gonna shoot those Hammers? mtmuley

I think there are plenty of hunters that have no business using .22 centerfires for big game. Just like there are plenty of hunters jerking the trigger on a magnum. mtmuley

I kind of enjoy this thought process and I'm not arguing with you but I'm just curious what the cut off is for enough gun. Is a .243 kosher with everyone?

I use one. 80 grain bullet. Might drop to a 70. Sane ranges and scenarios. mtmuley

So 80 grain 6 mm bullet is good but 80 grain 22 cal of similar construction is bad? This is where I really get myself wrapped around the axel with this stuff. The 243 is probably one of the most recommended cartridges for young/new shooters

Didn't say that. I use what I have and the bullets I feel work. I have a .243 not a 223. And I don't use the .243 for everything. Think I posted that earlier. mtmuley

I have no personal experience, nor can I recall someone I know telling me about using them.

I don't doubt they'd probably work, but I'd personally ease into them and see how it goes on a tag of less importance. They won't hang on to velocity as well as the match bullets, so I wouldn't stretch the distance all that far.

It fine if its your jam but I just don't see how a guy would have a problem shooting something a little more manly like a suppressed 6 creed. I guess I'm tuffer than I we all thought.

Ha! I assume that's tongue in cheek, a suppressed 6 Creed is pretty phenomenal. While I've been having fun experimenting with the 22 cals if I was heading out on the hunt of a lifetime today I'd take a 6mm.
