My 9-year old daughter wants to go deer hunting with me. I took her with me archery hunting this past season and she liked it. Now she wants to get her apprentice license and actually hunt with me in the youth season. I need to get a new slug gun for her to shoot, as I'm afraid my 12 ga. will be too much gun for her.

Looking for opinions about the Rossi single shot 20 ga. vs. the H&R single shot 20 ga. Due to regulations in Illinois, a .410 is not allowed for deer, so 20 ga. is as low as I can go. Thanks

20 is a very good deer gun but I would not go single shot or pump. She will not like the recoil and will be afraid to shoot it. I have seen this several times. Get a semi auto. Get a youth style that fits her like the Escort Line or Remingtons. The new Remingtons have recoil reduction technology in them that greatly reduces felt recoil. You are going to want the gun pleasurable to shoot so they are not afraid of the gun. I have my son shooting my old A5 auto. I just bought a cracked stock for cheap and glued it up then cut it to fit him. He really enjoys shooting it. My friend bought this kids a single shot. One practice shot and the kids never wanted to shoot a gun again. Another buddy bought the Mossberg pumps and got the same results. Kids afraid of pulling the trigger.

I agree with the above, the light single shots can be brutal. I wouldn't be against a good pump, but I'd make sure the stock was the proper length for her and put on a good recoil pad (Decelerator, Simms, etc).

Another option, if possible, is to get a muzzleloader. It'd be easier to tailor the load to her recoil tolerance with one vs. a shotgun.

I totally agree with everthing 1 pt said muzzleloader can be a great option and teaches them they only have one shot and you have to make it count.
Good luck let us know how she does
