Took the kid out last weekend to fill a deer tag in a restricted weapons area. We get there and start getting our gear on and find out someone left their orange at the house. So back in the truck and fast round trip to get back shortly after legal. Pull up to our parking area and theres a very nice whitetail buck chasing a doe 50yds from the brush pile we were planning on sitting beside. Tried a sneak, but didn't work out. Looked up on the ridge and low and behold theres another buck chasing a doe. So we began a 1/2 mile sneak through zero cover but a little bit of terrain. We managed to get within 90yds at one point but he was chasin the doe all over. We made a little move and they came by and stopped......but at 120yds, which is a Looooong shot with a shotgun...least with my modified 870. But, I figured if I didn't tell him it was a long shot he wouldn't know. So told him to hold on the top of the back and shoot. BANG!.. flop.. dead buck....and a little scope wound lol, shotgun kicks a lot more than his 7mm-08, something else I figured I shouldn't tell him about. LOL

Ran home to get his little sister and walked back in a mile for the retrieval. Easy peasy

Congrats to your son on a nice buck and a great shot.

I've taken my kids out to a weapons restriction area a time or two with a 20ga 870 set up with a scope.
It's been a few years since I hunted with a slug gun. I'm originally from a state where rifles aren't legal for deer, so a good slug gun is standard there. I still have a Hastings rifled slug barrel for my 870 12 ga, but an Ithica Deerslayer was probably the best slug gun I've used (my brother still hunts with it back home).

I grew up back east where some areas were rifle others shotgun. This has a Hastings rifled slug barrel also

Sounds like a great hunt. I have an 870 wing master with a slug barrel that was given to me by an uncle. My goal is to get it ready to hunt with next fall.

The hot setup in shotgun only states now is the Savage 12 & 20ga bolt action rigs. They've got the Accu trigger and are set up just like a good bolt action rifle.
200 yard shots are doable with good copper sabots, if you know what you are doing.

Congratulations on a great experience with your son! Great shot and nice buck!

I live in NYS and we used to have to use shotguns in our Southern Zone. My poor 870, tricked out with a Hastings barrel and a Leupold 2-7 VX 2 shotgun scope with a heavy duplex, hasn't seen the light of day since they allowed rifles over 10 years ago..... Used to get 2" groups or so at 100 yds using 2 3/4" Remington Copper Solids. It did the job too! If I was using it today, I would pin the barrel in place as additional insurance as the scope is mounted on the receiver while the barrel is removable.

Mine LOVED the old remmy copper solids it would put 5 into a group the size of the box @ 100. Then they changed them somehow and it doesn't like them anymore. Doesn't seem to like the new fancy bullets either and at 3-4 bucks a pop im ok with that. It shoots regular ole 1oz slugs into a 8" group @ 100 with a cheap bushnell 4x scope.

Have you tried Lightfield EXPs? My slug gun that liked the Copper Solids shoots these even better and they are far from the most expensive. I've yet to find a slug more accurate in 2 different slug guns.

PS- Might want to look into a Leupold 4X, or any other model, for more eye relief to keep the youngster from getting bonked...
