SD Draw

The cat quota hasn't been filled for the last several years. I'm not convinced thats the problem any longer.

If numbers are down how crazy was it when they were up?

I hunted the hills in 18 and took my son for a youth die last year in WR. We saw deer almost constantly.

Certainly not like here.

Missed out on Black Hills WT buck with 4 points. Not as bad as my WY 69 antelope doe application. Same tag numbers for the Black Hills this year but 150 additional nonresidents applied in the 2 or more points category. The tag went from almost a sure thing to not.

On the bright side ND released draw results yesterday too. Drew a WT buck tag in my home unit as expected but was surprised to finally draw a muzzleloader buck tag after a dozen years of applying.

That hills tag is getting pretty tough until you have at least 2-3 pp for WT. I have 9 points going for any deer. According to the draw results, people with 10 pp or more still only had a 40% chance for that tag.

Deer numbers in general seem steady from last year but still way down from 6-7 ish years ago. Not as many cat hunters anymore so it is hard to say if quotas not being filled are indicative of numbers or not. I think when it was legalized to hunt them, everyone around here wanted to go until they realized how much walking you had to do without dogs. A guy I train with works for forest service and seems to believe there are still a lot. We have a young one running the creek near us.

I should have been more specific. Can't use dogs on S.D. side, cat hunters hunt Wyo side because of that restriction. Game warden says there are way more cats then the state is admitting to. I also think that this is why more and more cats are showing up 500 to 700 miles east of the hills, just my two cents.

Thanks for the clarification

I guess this can be my introduction post. Long time lurker, I have really enjoyed all of your post. You have kept my mind busy the last few years. It’s time to go now.

I drew WR any deer with 2 points. Unit 21. I’m a little jacked up. With all three of my boys playing football and the youngest moving up to middle school ball. I have now retired as a youth football coach. I now get to sit back and watch a game I love. It’s a bitter sweet moment. I’m really going to miss all my little dudes on Saturday mornings and practice nights really bad. But watching them grow as players is a super awesome thing. It was worth every moment, while putting my hunting on hold. Traveling hunting that is. We hunt pretty hard in state here in WI. Bears, deer, squirrels, turkeys on the days we can. I have been collection points in SD, WY, CO and will start Montana this year. I’m also taking advantage of some of the states deals on youth preference points for all three boys. One is 19 now so full price. Someday we will have a lot of fun running the prairie and mountains.

I’m so jacked to get out, hike, hunt and explore. It’s only an 8-9 hour drive so I should be able to get out one or two times to scout. I’ve been escorting for two years, talked or played phone tag with the CO. Talked to GF one time too.
Congrats on the draw, 21 is a good unit. Is it an any deer tag? GFP implemented a cwd guidelines and I believe Pennington county is within those guidelines. I would take a shotgun for your off days. There are quite a few sharpies out there. Best of luck!

Yes it’s an any deer tag. I talked to the BGNG folks Friday, more so about camping. The guy I talked to said there are some good deer. Confirmed some e-scouting questions I had. With out asking he pointed me to the areas I was thinking.
Thanks for the info on the sharp tail.
