Looking to get an optic for my 22 mag that will be used as my coon calling rifle. What do you all recommend? Cant decide between a 3x9, 4x12 or something lower powered. When my son is with me he will be running a AR in 22 mag with a 1-4 with a dot.

I don't think you need too much magnification. Honestly a straight 4 power would probably work. If you want variable something like a 2-7 or 3-9 would be good.

It depends on how much you want to spend. You could also look used and pick up a Luepold Vari x 2 for pretty reasonable. Midway may still have a sale on Burris also.

I have a couple Leupold 3x9 Freedom 40mm scopes on .22 mag and .17 HMR. Very rarely do I need anything more than 6 power. I'm primarily shooting ground squirrels out to 100-125 yds.

I put a 3-9x42 vortex diamondback on my 17 hmr. Works well for the 200 yards i hit prairie dogs at. The 9x is nice for hitting jac rabbits at 300 yards, and the 3x is good foe coyotes at 20 yards.

on anything rimfire, I’m very happy with 2-7x or 3-9x. I keep wanting to try the VX-Freedom Rimfires, but have recently cheaped out and went with a Burris Droptine with the Rimfire reticle. I’ve only put a couple hundred rounds through it but it was great fun plinking cans out to 125yards with a .22LR.

Low power variable like the VX3HD 1.5x5 or Trijicon Credo 1x8, or some such flavor.

I doubt you're taking 400 yard shots on racoons.

Fixed 4 is what lives on mine.
