Anyone else hit the Swimming pool or open Water instead of hiking and biking ? I did a 1/2 mile yesterday around the 17 min mark. It was rough times and tomorrow I'm bringing the stop watch.

I'm going to the Clock tower lakes in Boise tomorrow with a few friends at 3:30PM if anyone wants to join me for a swim or watch me flounder around. We're starting from the Stairs and going to the docks across the way and back again.

throw a hook with worm on a line and tie it to your toe. you might catch a nice size large mouth out of there. :D

Better yet, just tie a big old rock to your ankle and get it over with by going to the bottom! I'll be at Lucky Peak all week so I might get off my duffer and swim a bit but I doubt it!

Mooseman, wasn't it you who found out you can't park a vehicle with a bike on top? Last night I was putting a Hard side Cartop Carrier on the wife's SUV for a trip tommorrow. I put it on and went out to my shop to check on something and she comes in talking trash. Yep, got in her SUV and drove it right into the garage......sorta. Women! John

It was me...... :(

I've been practicing swimming to beat last years time...... Next year I'll work more on the running and biking :D

Good for you Oscar. I can swim, just not well, or fast I guess. Go figure, i spent my childhood living in a home with a pool, but never did "laps" and spent all my time just doing the dog paddle or underwater diving stuff while playing around with friends. I wish I could swim, i would try one of those half iron man things, but the running also limits me with so-so knees.
I hate to admit it, by i think I am in the best cardio shape of my life this year. I hired a cycling coach to train smart, not longer. I was riding all wrong and going hours on end at 75% throttle. That is not how it is done i learned. What I am doing now is for example in a 120 min bike ride i do 90 minutes at a heart rate of 125-145BPM and then a 30 minute block at 168-180 BPM . It's like living through a heart attack, but it works.
When I first signed up with him 50 days ago i did a power test with him. He has this fancy "powertap" rear wheel with wireless computer that is hooked up to a bike computer and can be downloaded to a PC. I did a 10 mile time trial with an average power of 304 watts. I then did the same thing this past weekend and did it with 324 watts. Sound like a small improvement but it is pretty significant.
He always tells me my power is very impressive, and my body weight is all that is keeping me from being a real fast rider. I tell him that I like food and beer more than going fast, and remind him that the real reason i ride a bike is to get in shape for my real passion, hunting. Besides, my wife would not want me to look like a pro biker, with skinny little girl arms and that skeleton with legs look. There are guys in the Tour de France that are my height (6'1") and are a whopping 160 pounds!! it's all about power to weight ratio in biking. No thanks... toss me a beer

Schmalts.....that's almost a 10% increase in watts less than 2 months. That's huge form a physiological point of view. Especially considering it takes your body roughly 3 weeks to absorb the training you do each day. Its like you got a 10% increase actually on four weeks training.

Threshold training (high HR intervals) works, just be careful and don't get injured.....or burned out.

You'll be a hunting machine come fall.

I am feelling burned out. But after this Saturday's 3 hour ride with 2.5 hours of race Tempo I have a real easy week off until next Saturday's race. After this race I need to do more hiking and hill climbs. I did it one last week and my ankles were pretty sore for 4 days telling me it is time to get them in shape for the elk hunt. You can bike all you want, but it really does nothing for your ankles compared to hiking steep and off camber hills.
As far as high HR training, I often wonder when a guy is too old for that stuff?

You're right, nothing strengthens ankles like climbing, but I think you'll be surprised how quickly they come around. Especially if the rest of you is fit. There's also less risk of injuries, knee issues, etc. Just don't load up the backpack too much in the beginning. Trust me, I know.

What race are you training for? Three hours at 165+ BPM is a serious ride......

This is it. 90 miles road race around lake Winnebago. Last year it was 95 because of construction detours. It is just something I want to do to see if I do better than last year. I have zero chance of any money, and will be happy if I finish in the top 30%. I am just too fat for a real bike racer. A lot will depend on winds, and heat.

Looks like a good race. I've never ridden a 90 mile race.

The wind effects everyone the same and you'll probably be able to draft so that won't be too bad. If its really hot, just remember to stay hydrated and maybe take some salt tabs.

Good luck and have fun......

Moosie, you up for some kind of side bet this year? Most improved time percentage? or something like that?
You would have the advantage, since mine is all biking i would think high winds can destroy my goal much easier than a tri event because wind isnt as much a factor in running and swimming
