This morning I was getting off shift at the fire station when one of my fellow coworkers called me. He told me that he thought there was a dead elk not far from my station. Being a curious fellow, I went over to check it out. Once there I found a dead 5x5 bull. It was obvious that he had been struck by a vehicle. He was still steaming, so I thought I would contact Division of Wildlife Resources and maybe they would let me salvage the antlers and meat. After talking with a dispatcher for a long time, I was finally put into contact with a DWR Officer. He told me that I could not salvage any of it, and that the DWR "donates" it. However, he said that I might be able to plead my case to the responding officer about where the "donation" goes. After sitting along the highway for 2 hours, it dawned on me that not only was it Sunday, but it was Sunday during hunting season. I had no idea when an officer might show up. Unfortunately, I had given all of my personal information to the dispatcher so, with a sigh of disgust, I drove off. Nice job DWR on letting a perfectly good animal go to waste!

Back in the old days, when hunting was about getting meat and not much more, my grandpa hit a buck on the way to a hunting spot, tagged it, and drove home. I would bet the game wardens in those days would have commended such acts for their efficiency...

Thats a shame, sure hope he went to some good, would hae beeen a dandy to take home with a tag. Cars do there number on the game.

Only thing I could find, other than meat parts on I40 going to my AZ hunt...Semi hit for sure as there were no car parts...
