Return a CO deer tag?

Has anyone returned a CO elk or deer tag? If so what is the protocal? My dad drew on a second choice and wants to return it since he doesn't think he'll have time to hunt with me.

If your father has points he has to give the license back and let them keep the money in order to keep his points.. if he takes a refund he will lose his points. I learned this the hard way.

I've never returned a tag, but I've exchanged one for another. Since your dad didn't use any points, there's nothing to restore. He will still have his points. Here's what the regs say.

REFUNDS
1. To get a refund, you must relinquish your license and carcass
tag before the opening day of the season for which it is valid. The
license should be accompanied by a completed request form
obtained at a DOW office. Requests must be postmarked before
the season starts. If there isn’t enough time to request a form, mail
your license and carcass tag with a letter to the DOW. The envelope
must be postmarked before the season starts.
2. Requests made after a season starts must be submitted to the
DOW license review officer. NEW FOR 2006: After a season
starts, refunds are limited to extreme medical circumstances of the
licensee, death of the licensee or death of licensee’s immediate
family member.
3. Refunds aren’t considered more than 30 days after a season
starts. Except, the 30-day limit is extended for members of the
U.S. military whose military service prevented them from applying
for a refund within the required time limits.
4. The $3 application fee is not refunded. NEW FOR 2006:
Preference points used in applying are not restored to your record
if you return your license. Except, points may be restored in cases
of extreme medical circumstances of the licensee, death of the
licensee or death of licensee’s immediate family member.

Thanks Oak. I knew I'd read that someplace, but I coudln't find it in the regs last night when I skimmed though them. I guess I'll send them an email and see if they'll send him a request form.

No sweat... I was 99% sure he could return it for a refund and keep his points or I woudln't have had him put in.
