Was a pretty wild one. Dominated by the usual anti-hunting activists that show up to all the CPW commission meetings. Sam Miller made an appearance trying to resurrect her fur ban. Dr. Niemiec tried to focus on banning electronic calls and dispatch methods for trappers. However, the commenters wanted to shift towards banning mountain lion and black bear hunting. The few sportsmen and women commenters quickly drew the ire of the audience. Apparently even an out of state paid political lobbyist from Wildlife For All showed up to “own the trophy hunters”.Want to know why Dr. Niemiec pushed for a bag limit of 2 and a ban on fur sales? How about her involvement with CatsArentTrophies and the Proposition 127 campaign? Push for wildlife management policy solely based on personal values?
Just ask her.

Because farming, development, and motor vehicle collisions don’t harm wildlife in the slightest. In case you were wondering, “compassionate coexistence” is just code for eliminating human-caused animal mortality ie hunting.
Yep but they don’t concern themselves with that.Because farming, development, and motor vehicle collisions don’t harm wildlife in the slightest.
Well saidAbsolutely. Otero has been a complete embarrassment as the sportsmen’s representative. He very rarely speaks up for sportsmen and women. That is, when he actually shows up for commission meetings. He continually misses commission meetings, some where important votes are taken.
Interesting turn of events as they set 2 per daily bag limit for furbearers but killed the fur sales ban. No scientific justification for the limit, just the usual “social acceptance” line from Marlon Reis’ hand picked commissioners. Completely discarded the CPW agency recommendation. I don’t recall specific public comment period for the 2 per limit since Dr Niemiec just proposed it during the meeting. Seems like a violation of regulation setting process as there normally has to be a public comment period. Both votes were razor thin margins. Expect the usual anti-hunting groups to keep running petitions as they clearly have 5 votes in the bag and just need to find a swing vote. I suspect some form of Prop 127-Lion hunting ban to come up soon.
Considering the current makeup of the commission, these recent votes may be about as good of an outcome as we could have hoped for. It appears that Dr. Niemiec of the Anti-Hunting Policy Center at Colorado State University is basically running the commission now. Driving all the discussions, quoted directly in all the news articles. All this is bad news, particularly the new precedent that the commission will completely ignore agency recommendations and vote purely on their personal bias and agenda.
And then you were proven right, almost like you had a crystal ball! there was a citizen petition to ban the use of live bait for fishing across all waters in the state. Went before the commission. If I recall correctly one of the petitioners/supporters works for Dr. Niemiec (our newest anti-hunting commissioner) at the Colorado State University Anti-hunting Policy Center as a “researcher”.Yes but those of us that still live here need to get to stand together and weather the storm. I about crapped my pants earlier this week when the Steamboat Pilot had announced the Fat Marmot contest and then followed it up with a large article from a writer "Do we need a Constitutional Right to Bird Watch" - which was direct attack on Proposition 302. Not every voter is a dummy, but they are appealing to them in very creative and deceiving ways.
When the Cat ban was up for vote, I had uneducated idiots on Fish Explorer telling me we don't need to harvest cats and I was telling them these are the same people after your fishing rights and privileges.
If hunters and fisherman stay focused we can beat this out of state money and restore some balance.
It’s all so tiresome. I think I will choose to do what makes me happy (hunt, fish, mind my own business and be free) whether the mental illness that is in charge of the state like it or not.Yes but those of us that still live here need to get to stand together and weather the storm.
