This is one more wicked reminder that when you vote this fall - you will hopefully vote for the candidate that best aligns with your outdoor lifestyle regardless of their party affiliation.

The furbearer issue wouldn't even be up for vote if Polis wasn't exercising his anti hunting and fishing agenda!

The petition to ban fur sales in Colorado failed by a 6 to 5 vote today. The commission did however implement a bag limit of two per day, which wasn’t one of the alternatives presented to the public for comment but they passed it anyhow.

I'm glad to hear it failed. Hopefully every Sportsman in Colorado writes in questioning the bag limit and their lack of comment.

I feel for those of you in Colorado dealing with this and other issues.

Otero was the swing. Voted for the 2 bag limit but against the sale ban. He needs to hear from folks on what a bad vote that was, especially since it was never presented as an alternative to the public AND there were other alternatives that had been presented which were clearly compromise efforts.

I was definitely surprised that Otero (our sportsman’s representative) voted on the 2 bag limit for furbearers which ended up being the deciding vote. Normally he doesn’t do or say anything of value, but historically he had still voted on the side of sportsmen. Staff recommendation was to keep the bag limit at unlimited.

However, I will add that because the the 2 bag limit had just been passed, some of the commission seemed satisfied that there wouldn’t be possible over-harvesting. Dumb argument, but that in combination with the law enforcement issues seemed to persuade some. Both votes were 6-5, so only one vote difference was the swing. There was really no good argument on the pro-fur ban side, they kept going back and forth how they were still “concerned”, but 5 of them still voted to pursue the ban (which is scary). In my opinion, bag limit change was just enough to deny the commercial for ban.

Overall, seems like a good outcome for us as the bag limits seem like something that can be adjusted relatively easily down the road, while the commercial fur ban would be a little more complex.

Nobody voted for them. They are appointed by Polis, the governor. Who voted for polis is another story.

Absolutely. Otero has been a complete embarrassment as the sportsmen’s representative. He very rarely speaks up for sportsmen and women. That is, when he actually shows up for commission meetings. He continually misses commission meetings, some where important votes are taken.

Interesting turn of events as they set 2 per daily bag limit for furbearers but killed the fur sales ban. No scientific justification for the limit, just the usual “social acceptance” line from Marlon Reis’ hand picked commissioners. Completely discarded the CPW agency recommendation. I don’t recall specific public comment period for the 2 per limit since Dr Niemiec just proposed it during the meeting. Seems like a violation of regulation setting process as there normally has to be a public comment period. Both votes were razor thin margins. Expect the usual anti-hunting groups to keep running petitions as they clearly have 5 votes in the bag and just need to find a swing vote. I suspect some form of Prop 127-Lion hunting ban to come up soon.

Considering the current makeup of the commission, these recent votes may be about as good of an outcome as we could have hoped for. It appears that Dr. Niemiec of the Anti-Hunting Policy Center at Colorado State University is basically running the commission now. Driving all the discussions, quoted directly in all the news articles. All this is bad news, particularly the new precedent that the commission will completely ignore agency recommendations and vote purely on their personal bias and agenda.
