Pronghorn Scoring Question

Quick question for you guys...

Can the D-3 measurement ever be below the prong? The B&C says to raise it above the prong if the line is in the "swelling of the prong." This buck has high enough prongs, and short enough tops, that the D-3 is clearly in the full mass of the horn. The horn doesn't really "swell" on it either, it just raises straight into the prong. The difference here is 4" of mass per side. That just seems weird to me that a buck could potentially gain 8" of score due to that attribute. Or is D-3 always above the prong? And is D-2 always below the prong? What if it had a unique horn setup and only had 1" above the prong on each side, would you take both measurements of that single inch, or would you still devide by four and measure as normal?

The D-2 is always below and the D-3 is almost always above. In the rare case that the D-3 would fall below the swelling of the prong, it is taken below the prong. If it is on the swelling, it is taken above and noted on the sheet. This is a distinction that B&C makes that is different than P&Y (even though same scoring system). In P&Y the D-3 has to be taken above the prong. In either case, its probable the buck wouldn't score high enough to get into the book anyway. What you would have is a score that the Official Measurer would have to use some discernment.

So what you would have is a score that has meaning to you, but would not make it eligible for submission to B&C. It may be submitted to a state agency or some group if you were so inclined.
