Preserving whole hide and gutless method

A few years ago in Wyoming, we saved the hide on my son's nice 5x5 bull elk while also using the gutless method. We made our initial cut up the stomach center line from anus to just under the chin....similar to how you would field dress a deer but we were able to skin it and not puncture the abdominal cavity. Our only incision into the body cavity was to remove the tenderloins near the short ribs. My son hangs the hair-on hide over a stair railing and it looks great - and brings back even better memories of that particular hunt. Interesting/Funny note: I carefully skinned right along the abdominal center line - even splitting the scrotum down the center. I did this to see if we were getting our exact hide back...we did! Hope this helps...

Thanks. I have seen quotes for tanned elk hides but didn't know anyone who had one done. If we're successful and not too far from the truck, we're going to pack one out.
