Looking for a little help from those who are more knowledgeable. I have my eye on a couple of pre-64 Winchesters that may be offered for sale soon. Winchester provides a S/N lookup online that is easy enough to follow to determine the year manufactured. But from the S/N, is it possible to determine other information on the rifle? Featherweight, Super Grade, etc.? I could also provide some photos if it would help. I just want to find out more about them before I jump in with both feet and make a reasonable offer.

Thanks

For some Winchester firearms you can obtain a factory letter from the Buffalo Bill Center of the West (who currently has the records with details on everything about the gun) including where it was shipped. Unfortunately not for the Model 70.

Basically everything goes off of characteristics and what it would have looked like if factory produced. There are some reference books, but even those are expensive to obtain.

I’ve valued, bought, and sold a lot of pre-64 Model 70’s. Send me some photos and I’ll let you know what I can tell about it.

I have had two, still have one, the features they have are so cool, Even the discrete stripper clip notch in the receiver for fast reloading. The expensive midnight bluing was never done again. They had the adjustment screw in the for end to match barrel harmonics. I have that on my 1954 standard weight model 70 in .270.
