Saw that some of you are planning on hitting Prince of Wales next month and thought that you might like to see the results of our trip. We went the first week of may for a realatively short hunt. We really ony got to hunt four nights and took three bears. Two pretty small ones, and one MONSTER!
The first two bears, were a result of not seeing much the first couple of days and the trip winding down fast. Simple cases of the poor little fellers being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Both were about 5 ft....
However, on the last night we ran into a STUD! I was relegated to camera duty, because I got an itchy trigger finger the night before. I followed my buddy Chris and caught the whole stalk, shot and recovery on tape. It acutally is some pretty great footage.
We spotted the bear from the skiff, beached the boat about 1000 yards down the beach and arround a point. Tried our best to stalk down the beach, but the tide wasn't all the way out yet, so we ended up having to try and bushwack through the trees a little, which was all but impossible. The vegetation up there is so thick it has to be seen to be beleived. We managed to get to our target destiantion where we hoped to have about a 300 yard shot, but the bear was gone. We posted up for about 20 minutes hoping he would come back out of the trees, but he never did. We decided to creep a little further down the beach to see around a corner in the cove, and there he was. Things happened fast but I managed to get the camera on him, just before Chris let the Ultra Mag loose at 290 yards! The bear didn't even flinch, and even after reviewing the tape, we were worried he had missed. We crossed the bay, and went to where the bear was standing and there was bright red lung blood everywhere. A short tracking job later, and we found what could be one of the largest black bears ever taken on video. Ol' Moe as we are calling him ended up squaring 8' 2" with a 21 4/16" skull. Truly a massive critter!!! We estimated his weight at 750 lbs. Three of us couldn't even move him into a position to get some decent pictures..... All in all it was a GREAT hunt and I can't wait to go back. We did see a total of 16 bears with 6 of thoses being sows with cubs, one in town and three off the sholder of the road. We ended up taking the only three bears we actually got our crosshairs on. I think we were a little early, and our trip was to short. Next time I will go later in May and spend an entire week hunting.
Hope you guys have a great trip, and feel free to PM me if you have any questions I might be able to help with!
