Tancredo: Sell Federal Land to Fund Katrina Relief

Selling 15% of Low-Use Land Would Generate $148 Billion for Katrina Relief, Rebuilding

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Tom Tancredo (R-CO) introduced a bill today to sell a portion of federal land holdings and to use the proceeds for natural disaster or terrorist attack relief. The bill directs the Secretary of the Interior Gayle Norton to designate 15 percent of federal land for sale, excluding National Parks and land held for Indian tribes. The Interior and Agriculture Departments would prioritize selling land in states where the federal government owns more than 15 percent of the total acreage.

“The federal government may be cash-poor, but it is land-rich. There is demand for farm and ranchland, and the federal government should have long ago transferred its massive holdings to the private sector, where it can be put to use,” said Tancredo. “Not only would land sale provide a one-time cash infusion for the Katrina catastrophe, but also it would establish long-term property and sales tax revenue streams.”

Nemont, Yeah it was amazing how you and Oak posted the exact same article and said about the same thing, at almost the same time.

I, too, like Tancredo's stance on the border issues, but couldn't vote for him because of his idea that all "unproductive" public land should be sold. I think it was Oak that pointed the same thing out to me a couple months ago. Schmalts must have missed that thread.

I about had a heart attack when my Dad told me he was ok with selling off federal land. I had a hard time finding places to hunt while I was in Texas because it was all private. I don't want to see Wyoming going that way. Chances are that these expensive to maintain border type stuff that was going to be sold off may have been some great areas for hunting. MHO

I am a one issue voter this election, yes i am, but only if there is no other candidate that will have the nads to confront this problem. If we dont fix this now, our country will be dragged down to the shithole standard of Mexico and hunting rights wont do you any good anyway. Yes I really dont like the other things you brought up, but for me those things are far less important than the immigration problem and every candidate has his share of problems and it is always the lesser of evils. Its a balance thing where i have hunting in one hand, and my country's future in another. I see the border, immigtation, and overpopulation problem a bigger deal than land sales at this time because it takes a bigger man to say screw the cooperations that normally fund campains. The land sell off is an issue that will be a lot less of an agenda and may never happen, but the border and Immigration is already happening and will drag this country down fast. Did you watch this video guys?? http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4094926727128068265&q=
This is more important than hunting IMO. It is our future for all of us, and something that cannot be reversed other than a pandemic killing a shitload of us.

Good luck on being a single issue voters. This country and the world we live in today are just too complex to boil everything down to a single issue. People have been worried about over population since ancient times. Read some Thomas Malthus. Bigger issue face us then just immigration and over population.

Nemont

The problem is that everyone wants to vote for a government that will give them the most. Whatever happened to "ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country" ? or in that lines.
We cannot keep voting for a government that will keep giving things to those who do not make the best of the opportunities given to them. I am sick of our welfare driven government. Time to close up the immigration doors and make countries improve what they have instead of coming to us for a handout. We have to get a government in power that isnt afraid to tell you "tough Shit" if you did something wrong instead of babying everyone because of being afraid of not being politicly correct (man i hate that term).

I remember Tancredo`s land bill....I Have gladly written him in on my ballot ..and will again...If you don`t like the land sale bill... then Rally/Lobby to stop it... Put me down as behind Tom Tancredo 100%... He is the only candidate willing to "GET TOUGH" on illegal immigration.....the rest are just good old boys....I am willing to let other issues go.. just to get a real man like TANCREDO in power....time for a change

I didn`t miss the thread,[ i was against it back then, still am]] but consider where is/what happened to Tancredo`s land bill?... I guess it comes down to whats most important to you , Healthcare? Abortion? Corruption? Economy? Illegal Immigration?

Nemont/Oak/WH.... Is the Tancredo bill really a reason not to vote for him... does that make you guys also 1 issue voters?:)

The sale of public lands is a multiple issue thing. It isn't just hunters who would be hurt by it.

Tancredo has not standing nationally and he is not going to be nominated so I don't waste much time on him.

So is the illegal immigration issue a "multiple use thing"

And your right he won`t be nominated, but he still gets my write in votehump

I`m sick of the pack leaders...When "King" Karl Rove told Tancredo to stay away from the Whitehouse... I knew he[Tancredo] was a good man.

If you think securing the border and getting control of illegals is a one issue thing, you are not paying attention to the issues involved. Crime rates, leeching off the system, working for cash so no taxes, open borders are open for all (terrorists included), drug smugglers, etc etc. I see all kinds of problems that illegals are causing while prosecuting here. Just show up on "Spanish Day" in my court and you will see for yourself. 95% of teh defendants are there for Never Obtaining a Driver's License and No Insurance. Plus, my county has a terrible heroin problem. I think the last number I heard is that we are averaging 1 OD death per week off heroin. Last time I checked guys, heroin is not a cash crop in Utah.

I am all for selling federally owned property to pay for Katrina relief....sell off all the projects in New Orleans, plow em down, and relocate the former residents to the east coast. From what family is telling me (they live in Baton Rouge), most of the people who owned property there have returned to rebuild their lives. The ones you hear about complaining are the ones who are abusing the welfare system, and have been for generations.

So if this is the issue that top's all other issues, why did J. D. Hayworth lose in the last election? Guy's in Arizona couldn't even keep him in office. What chance is there of getting Tancredo elected POTUS? Zip. Waste of vote.

Why did every anti-illegal issue/ proposition in the same election pass overwhelmingly? hump

Hayworth was crucified by the Liberal
AZ press as being mean -spirited towards the poor downtrodden "Migrants" they can`t say illegal, to insensitive.

You are clueless about Arizona politics... if J.D. hayworth was in a state wide election he would have won in a landslidehump

But with help from our slimey governor he was "barely" defeated in a Pro-illegal district

Plus the Democrats thru MILLIONS behind Harry Mitchel
