I have a couple of the older series simmons AETEC scopes in 2.8-10X44 . I replaced these with the new Leupold VX2's . As far as brightness and clarity I think The older simmons is a little better.
Any input on these older Simmons scopes ?

I had one, but it went wonky after a drop that put a dent in the objective bell. Cost me my first bull elk and almost my first buck mule deer. Shot fine before the trip, was 12" high and 6" right after the trip.

It was clear enough and tracked fairly well before that though. I wouldn't seek one out to buy, but if I had one that was working I'd keep using it until it didn't.

I have one of the old ones. It isn't a great scope. A lot of spherical aberration limits the useful field of view. The power adjustment is looser than I like as well.

Simmons makes an OK low end scope, I used a few when I was young and foolish. Now I'll spend a little more money for a much nicer scope.
