Over this last weekend my wife's family gathered to celebrate the 100 years since her maternal side homestead in Northern Phillips County. Tons of old pics but this is one that I found interesting.

three of the nine girls posing with their shotguns and at least one rooster.

These were first generation of homesteaders who came from the Ukraine and most spoke English as their 2nd language and mostly poorly.

Yeah it was in the thirties. What these ladies would be about 16 to 22 years old. I guess I should have said first generation born in the U.S. not first generation of the homesteaders.

I have to imagine that those who successfully homesteaded northern Phillips County were some hard campers and tough folks.
