NM OIL Oryx 26

Just returned from my OIL Oryx hunt in New Mexico. The hunt was much tougher than I anticipated. Those animals are much like pronghorn in a lot of ways. Seems they loved to get out there between 500-700 yards and move as you move along.

I ended up shooting my bull at just over two hundred yards right at the end of legal shooting light on the second day. The 7mm STW did it's part with one shot the bull hit the deck at the crack of the rifle. I wish I had a great story about an awesome stalk but the truth is this hunt is mainly a truck hunt. We did have a half dozen or so failed stalk attempts that ended with animals staying just out of range or the edge of my 500 yard limit.

Saw roughly 90 animals while on the range. We had a tenderloin this evening and the meat is maybe the best I've ever ate. They are super cool animals and live in some really cool country. The grandson and I had a real blast chasing them for a few days. Such a blessing to have such a tag this year.

I've killed elk, moose, caribou, that probably ranked as my top three. It's better than all those. I'd say somewhere between beef and moose to me. Just a nice texture to it and no smell really to be had while processing. Kinda odd considering they survive in the desert in such a dry environment.
