Hello fellow hunters, I am planning a trip to the Newcastle Wyoming area next fall for the deer season opener. I've never been outside of Michigan for hunting and this will be a new experience for me. Any helpful advice???? We plan to utilize public land and staying at hotels in the area. I just want to have the best experience with most opportunity to take a good buck. I would appreciate any help or resources concerning areas that might be better then others. Thanks from the upper peninsula of Michigan!

Go to the pizza barn for their prime rib. There's no wal mart there, only a dinky local department store called Pamida, so get what you need before you get there. I hunted there a couple of years ago and there was a huge winterkill, so animal numbers are way down.

Cush beat me to it, but the best advise some guys will give you is where to eat, drink, and maybe catch a talent show :D

Places to stay. I've stayed at the "Pines" very nice and tucked back into a quiet neighborhood. Problems waking neighbors up in the early am. Family owned. I usually stay at the "Auto inn" located on the north side of town. Nice. back right up to the door and unload. Not near any neighborhoods. Used by workers in the area. I don't worry about waking people up in the early am. Gas station across the street.

Pizza barn :)

Good luck to all

For the hunting it will depend if you are in general A or B. I've hunted general B for deer and antelope the past three years. I'm 2 for 3, having not killed one this past year. As a group we are 4 for 6 over three seasons. It is not a trophy area in the slightest. You will see deer, most times on private land. You'll see plenty of does. It is one of those areas that getting any buck on public land is a success, at least in my opinion. This fall, on our first day, I spotted a little forky on public land. I chose not to try and pursue him thinking I could find something better. I ended up not getting another opportunity at a buck on public land.

We were hunting antelope as well on the past three hunts so deer weren't our only focus. I do think if we would go solely for deer that we could have been more successful.

I will likely not hunt general B for deer again, having killed two modest bucks out there. If you are wanting to just kill a mule deer buck then give it a try. If you want a "good" buck, I'd go elsewhere.

I have no info on general A. I know there's a better deer population up there, trophy potential not great either. Takes a point to draw IIRC.

GPS, Google earth

I have hunted the area in the past for both antelope and people in my group also had mule deer tags. This is not a trophy unit by any means and like they have said before, there are a lot of does. Here are some pics of the mule deer that were shot, we went 3 for 4, they small one was shot the last afternoon as meat in the freezer. My brothers was enormous for the area and the biggest one we had seen scouting and is the exception for the area. Here is my secret to success. Download the hunting GPS maps, buy a map book, and mark every chunk of public, walk in access, or any other form of accessible land onto the map book. From here do a google earth search and mark every water hole or section of trees onto the map. Focus on both of these when you start your scouting.
